How Foreigners Actually Pay in China (2026 Guide)
China is one of the most cashless countries in the world. Not cashless like “most people prefer cards.” Cashless like — the street food vendor, the corner convenience store, the taxi driver — everyone expects you to scan a QR code.
If you show up with only cash or a foreign Visa card, you’ll survive. But you’ll also get stuck at a few moments that could have been completely smooth.
Here’s what actually works.
The honest hierarchy
Alipay — your best friend as a foreigner. Download this first. WeChat Pay — works too, and worth setting up as backup. Cash (RMB) — still useful in smaller cities, markets, or emergencies. Foreign credit card — accepted in international hotels and some chain stores. Mostly unreliable elsewhere.
Set up Alipay before you arrive
Since 2023, Alipay lets you link a foreign Visa or Mastercard directly. No Chinese bank account needed. No Chinese phone number needed.
How to set it up:
- Download Alipay from the App Store or Google Play — do this before you land
- Sign up with your international phone number
- Verify your identity with your passport
- Link your Visa or Mastercard
That’s it. Once set up, you can pay for almost everything by scanning a QR code or showing your payment barcode.
One thing to know: some small vendors only accept WeChat Pay, not Alipay. So ideally, set up both. If one fails, the other usually works.
What about WeChat Pay?
WeChat is China’s main messaging app — think WhatsApp, but everyone uses it, and it has a built-in payment system.
Setup is similar: link your foreign Visa or Mastercard. The process is slightly stricter than Alipay, so if you run into issues, Alipay is the easier path.
Also worth knowing: WeChat Pay sometimes blocks transactions above ¥300 with foreign cards. It’s inconsistent. Alipay tends to be more reliable for larger purchases.
What if your card doesn’t link?
Try Alipay’s TourCard — it’s a mini-program inside Alipay where you can top up with a foreign card and pay anywhere. There’s a small service fee (around 3–5%) but it’s a solid backup.
